Always Eternal

Thought For The Week 327 By Val Warsop

How can we explain, or even try to understand, the eternal nature of Yahweh?  He has always existed, always ‘been’; He is the ‘Self-existent One’!  How can He relate to us in our tiny, seemingly insignificant existence in His universe?  He is Immense!  Yet He is so involved with us.  He loves, He cares, He plans for us; He shows mercy and compassion.  As these thoughts filled my mind overwhelmingly, I  found myself begging Yahweh for mercy for the arrogance that fills us humans during the few, short years we spend in His universe.  I found myself searching my heart: Do I respect Him enough? What is my perception of Him? Is my love for Him as my Father balanced by reverence for His greatness?  He is, and always has been, ETERNAL!

“For the high and exalted One He who inhabits eternity, Whose name is Holy says this,” writes Isaiah, “I dwell on the high and holy place, But also with the contrite and humble in spirit…” [Isaiah 57:15, Amplified Bible].  It is in Yahweh’s divine plan that He should be with us!  This is why scripture records, “He has set eternity in the human heart” [Ecclesiastes 3:11, italics added].  What does that mean?  The Amplified Bible describes it as ‘a sense of divine purpose…a mysterious longing which nothing under the sun can satisfy, except [Yahweh]’!

Yahweh made us in His own image, and it was always His intention that we should be Family.  For this reason, “He has put a longing for immortality in our beings, something that demands God and heaven,” writes A.W. Tozer.  In a remarkable statement, the apostle Paul wrote, “…before the foundation of the world he chose us to become, in [Messiah], his holy and blameless children living within his constant care” [Ephesians 1:4, J.B. Phillips, italics added].  Even before the creation Yahweh was planning for us, designing redemption’s plan for people not yet created. He would mercifully provide, through His Son, the way for sinners to become holy and blameless.

As we reflect on His omnipresent, eternal, majestic existence, we must bow before Him in humility and contrition and, in doing so, we are assured that He will dwell with us!
