Many years ago, I found an old book which, written in the 19th century, had the weighty title, ‘Some Principles and Practices of the Spiritual Life’. Curiously, I browsed its pages and sentences began to leap off them and straight into my heart – I bought it, naturally! It was a fascinating study, although the language was dated, the message delighted and inspired me. Who was this man? When my research revealed that he had been a Roman catholic priest, I was shocked to discover that this troubled me; why was that? Despite being a voracious reader, I was limited by a narrow view of where I could find soul-food. What a tragedy!
The Holy Spirit, sent by Yahshua to lead us into all truth, gives witness to those things which are of Yahweh. Wherever our studies lead us, we must depend on Him for that witness, He will not fail us. There are multitudes of wonderful people who have gone before us, men and women who longed for the same spiritual things, walked the same narrow pathway, and joyed over the same ancient paths as we do. The longer I walk with Yahshua, the more aware I become of this immense ‘cloud of witnesses’ [Hebrews 12:1]. I love to ‘glean’ among the writings left behind, from the Scriptures themselves to everything else that Yahweh puts in my way; there is so much to be learned, so much help to be gained, so much encouragement and comfort to receive.
Recently I was captivated by this quotation from an unknown, 14th century speaker, “Children, I commend you from the bottom of my heart into the captivity of the Cross of our Lord [Yahshua, the Messiah]; that it may be in you, over you, behind you, and before you, lying heavy on you, and yet received by you with free and full acquiescence to the will of [Yahweh], whatever it may please Him to do with you.” And from the 19th century, “The proof that I have been through crucifixion with [Yahshua] is that I have a decided likeness to Him…the resurrection life of [Yahshua] invades every bit of my human nature.” [Oswald Chambers]. Think on these things!
