Finding Yahweh’s will is a major challenge, especially to young or new believers and I have often been asked, “How can I know?” Yahshua said, “For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me.” (John 6:38 NIV) He was supremely confident in the knowing and doing, and we long to be like Him! How possible is that?
Recently I came across some interesting advice: “When we want to know [Yahweh’s] will there are three things which always concur: the inward impulse, the Word of [Yahweh], and the trend of circumstances! [Yahweh] in the heart, impelling you forward; [Yahweh] in the Book, corroborating whatever He says in the heart; and [Yahweh] in the circumstances, which are always indicative of His will. Never start until these three things agree.” –Lettie B. Cowman. As a missionary in Japan, where she and her husband helped to found the Oriental Missionary Society, and later as president of this society, and author of several books, Lettie Cowman spent her life serving Yahweh; she knew the urgency of ‘knowing and doing’ His will. I find the fact that she italicised the last sentence in the quotation very thought-provoking, and I pass on her advice today as worthy of our consideration.
Are you at a crossroads? Facing change in circumstances, lifestyle, work? Are you feeling a hunger in your heart to know the will of Yahweh? Ask Him earnestly, check the three pointers; He won’t keep you waiting for long! And bear in mind the injunction, “Never start until these three things agree.”
