As I read these words today my heart was stilled and I paused to reflect on the far-reaching understanding and wisdom that penned them. It’s so easy to expect the One Who can miraculously and instantly deal with all our sin to do the same for us with all life’s problems and sorrows. Easy to feel shocked or hurt or bewildered when we find ourselves struggling to survive the storms of life. We ask ourselves, “Why - when He CAN - doesn’t He…?”
As humans we often strive to find reasons for the things we go through; we beg Yahweh to give understanding for difficult situations; we struggle with the need to know ‘Why?’ Over the years I have come to believe that it is presumptuous to try to ‘second-guess’ Yahweh, to try to find motives or reasons for the things He allows. For example, I cannot believe that my Mother’s death from Alzheimer’s was sent (or allowed) to help me to become a more competent and empathetic counsellor; I believe it was a tragedy that happened. What I have learned from the experience has worked in me for good as the apostle Paul assured me it would (Romans 8:28). But why Yahweh allowed such a dreadful thing is not for me to know now.
I believe it’s not important to understand the ‘why’; it is important to trust the One Who is ‘in charge’, the One Who could…but doesn’t! Remember, the things that Yahweh is asking of you today may seem very hard, but they are not His final word! The prophet David would say, “Hope thou in [Yahweh]!” (Psalm 42:5)
