Over the years, I’ve counselled and listened to many people who worry about hearing Yahweh’s voice. “He doesn’t speak to me”, they cry. Or “How do I know when it’s Yahweh speaking?” These are important concerns because listening to Yahweh is of primary importance. Recognising His voice and learning to act when He speaks are lessons we must learn; lessons He is more than willing to teach.
Yahweh begins our training by speaking to us from His Word, the Bible. In it we can find all the help we need to live the kind of lives He approves! After Moses died, the burden of leadership fell on Joshua. As he stepped into that role Yahweh spoke to him saying, “Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do” [Joshua 1:8, New Living Translation]. Yahweh outlines His expectations very clearly, so as we read we need to pause and think about them, examining our lives to see if we’re measuring up. Sometimes a verse, a commandment, an expectation, or a promise will seem to ‘leap’ off the page and into our hearts. You can be sure that Yahweh is speaking to you then; take notice! Say with the songwriter, “I will listen to what Yahweh says” [Psalm 85:8].
Sometimes Yahweh will speak to us through others - a minister, a friend, even a child. Recently I shared a story about my father who, one year and two days after his salvation, wrote in his diary, “Today, I finished reading the Bible through for the first time.” The Holy Spirit quickened this to one of the listeners, who contacted me the next day to say she was planning to read her Bible through for the first time. Yahweh had spoken to her through that story.
Yahweh will never say anything that contradicts what is already recorded in His Word. If you feel He has spoken to you, check your Bible. If He says the same thing in there, then you can be sure He has; be listening.
