Recently I have been pondering this, “…they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one.” [Jn. 17:14-15] Yahshua’s heart was heavy because of His imminent death, His prayer passionate and enlightening; we do well to consider the things He prayed about!
Those of us who love Yahshua, even today, are not of this world although we are in it. As never before we are exposed to its demands and its ethics. Education, literature, TV programmes, advertising, all ensure that we are regularly assaulted by the world and in constant need of Yahweh’s protection from ‘the evil one’. Some of his ploys are very subtle, often cloaked in fine phrases that seem logical and acceptable; we need wisdom to discern our way. For example there is, today, a heavy emphasis on ‘finding’ oneself, whereas Yahshua said, “…whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.” [Matt.16:25]
In asking us to lose our own lives and live in submission to Him, Yahshua is not asking us to do anything He has not done Himself. He lived as a submissive, obedient Son to His earthly parents [Luke 2:51] and always did those things that pleased His heavenly Father. [John 8:29] So if you feel you are going through a time of submission, losing a sense of your individuality, of who you are, be encouraged, it is because Yahshua is making you one with Him. A successful spiritual life is exactly opposite to that which ‘the world’ offers.
