We live in a world where standards are constantly changing. The fallout from two world wars altered perceptions and challenged previously held standards to the limit. The world in which we live today would have puzzled and shocked my grandparents. Whilst many things have changed for the better and lifestyles have improved dramatically, yet a disintegration of moral standards and righteous values has created a world which frequently appears to have no boundaries.
This is not a phenomenon exclusive to the 21st century. The Bible records many instances where righteousness was swept aside by immorality and self-centred grasping; and the descent is always ugly. I am always disturbed when I read Paul’s description of the last days in his letter to Timothy [2 Timothy 3:1-5]. For the past fifty years I have pondered on how well it describes our postmodern society. Each time I have dwelt on it I wonder at how it gets worse! Paul describes our day as ‘terrible times’ and says, unequivocally, ‘Have nothing to do with them.’ [v5] (Read the passage to see the kind of people Paul says to avoid - Ed.)
Yahweh’s standards are clear, and I urge you to hang onto them and raise a banner of righteousness in your own small corner of this world of ours.
I do not ask that You will take them out of the world, but that You will keep and protect them from the evil one.
