It was my birthday morning and as I pottered round my kitchen I was feeling a little bemused. “How did I get to be 74?” I murmured aloud. The answer flashed back, “Because last year you were 73!” I chuckled at the absurdity, but it started me thinking about the stepping stones of life. Growing older isn’t an option, we begin to do so from the moment we are born! Life is made up of moments, hours, days, months, years; they build steadily one after the other, growing out of each other, and we can do nothing to alter the natural progression of time. Memories are built up around the joy and excitement of the high spots of life, around the comforting, gentle moments, and around the pain of difficult times and trauma. But in-between there are thousands of hours of steady, routine living.
Inevitably my thoughts turned towards the spiritual life and how the same principles occur there. Growing in stature, wisdom and knowledge of Yahshua also happens moment by moment. Finding the will of Yahweh may come as a quiet inevitability, or a blinding flash of revelation, but the outworking of it will be thousands of hours of steady, routine faithfulness. We all love the ‘high places’ of our spiritual life; we must learn to accept that these are the ‘memories’ around which the rest is built.
We are programmed by our world to want everything now, instantly, at once! But the good things of life take time! Salvation, the forgiveness of sin and the transfer from the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of light, happens in a glorious, life-changing instant. But the good things of the spiritual life take time! Holiness, knowledge of Yahweh, the image of Yahshua in me all grow slowly. We must continue, in faithfulness, to trust, to abide moment by moment.
I have been consciously walking with Yahshua for seventy years; a lifetime. I have highlights of this tucked away from my earliest memories until today, but there are thousands of plodding hours where I was simply moving forward. So how did it become 70? Because last year it was 69!

If you feel that your life is in a rut. If you feel trapped by anything that you can’t seem to get out of. [Yahweh] is the [Elohim] of wonderful change. He will release you, whom the Son sets free is free indeed.
