This time of year always makes me ask, “What makes a hero?” and “Who are the heroes?” I believe a hero is someone who gives his/her life for something he/she believes in passionately; who sacrifices personal desires to help others in need. There are heroes among the unsung multitudes of folk who give themselves to Yahshua and do those things that He asks of them. These are men and women who give their lives every day in acts of self-sacrifice and bravery as they follow in the footsteps of the King of kings. As we leave our Remembrance weekend here in Britain I want to salute and honour all those in the service of Yahshua who are giving their lives for what they believe in – you are my heroes.
My greatest-of-all Hero is Yahshua Himself; what an example! On the night before He died He said, “Greater love has no-one than this that he lay down his life for his friends.” [John 15:13] Then He went out and did just that, giving His life as the ultimate sacrifice in the Battle of the Ages, the war against sin. Amazingly, the fallout from His death [and subsequent resurrection] continues to affect the world today. What was the ‘fallout’? It was an explosion of righteousness and peace, opening a door for all those who believe in Him to receive forgiveness and salvation; and a subsequent challenge to live in the world as He did.
Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you. This is the essence of all that is taught in the law and the prophets.
