Emotions can control us, too. We can be filled with anxieties or fear, with happiness or love. In the scriptures the word ‘filled’ frequently carries the meaning ‘controlled’. When speaking about His imminent death and subsequent departure Yahshua said to His disciples, “…because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts…” (John 16: 6 Amp italics mine) At that time fear gripped and controlled their personalities. Have you ever been filled with fear, or had sorrow flood your heart? Such emotions consume us, taking over our thoughts, disturbing our sleep patterns, affecting our entire lives.
On the other hand we read in the book of Acts that on the day of Shavu’ot (or Pentecost) “All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit…” (2:4; italics mine) and this comes from the same Greek word. They were controlled by the Spirit of promise, and, of course, we know that yielding to Him caused them to speak in many languages which, to them, were unknown. It was a life-changing experience which launched them into a bold, confident season of service.
We are filled with the Holy Spirit when we voluntarily allow Him to possess and control our whole personality, and this brings our entire life under the headship of Yahshua. How wonderful! The Holy Spirit will control us from the centre of our personality, but He won’t obliterate who we are, He releases and enhances all that Yahweh has created us to be. His control of our thoughts, actions and even our motives will set us free, as we become closer and closer to hearing and knowing His voice in every situation and for every circumstance.
