Under His Eye

Thought For The Week 452

At the start of his reign, King Solomon received a unique blessing from Yahweh: “I will give you a wise and understanding heart such as no one else has had or ever will have” [1 Kings 3:12, italics added]!  Solomon’s wisdom became renowned.  Eventually, he became a collector of wise sayings, as well as writing many himself.  His collection was saved into the book known as ‘Proverbs’, and Solomon’s own proverbs, amassed by King Hezekiah, are shared in chapters 25-29.

Recently, I was arrested by Proverbs 15:11: “Sheol and Abaddon lie open before [Yahweh]— how much more, human hearts.”  ‘Sheol’ is a word describing ‘the place of the dead’ or ‘hell’, whilst ‘Abaddon’ means ‘the abyss’ or ‘place of destruction’.  Not very nice places, and widely removed from the purity and holiness of Yahweh.  Yet nothing is hidden from His eyes; they both ‘lie open’ before Him.  Unexpectedly, the writer of this proverb then links these horrors with the human heart!  Yahweh, who sees into them, also has access to the human heart.  We lie open before Him; not sometimes, but always.

Commenting on the proverb, Charles Spurgeon observes: “In all our acts, in all our ways, and in all our thoughts, we are continually under His observing eyes.”  Let’s pause a while and consider that.  We believe it…don’t we?  Do we?  The fact is something many of us have been taught.  But the reality is a whole different challenge.  Does the thought of Yahweh having access to your heart at all times make you feel uncomfortable?  It’s a bit disturbing, isn’t it?  If, in my mind, I accept it’s true, then I have to ask myself if I behave as though it’s true.  I ask if I’m comfortable with the thought that Yahweh has access to my inner person 24/7.  As I consider this, I’m arrested, sobered, thoughtful!

It’s very comforting to know “The eyes of [Yahweh] are on the righteous, and his ears are attentive to their cry” [Psalm 34:15].  But let’s remember the extent of this caring observation and consider if we may need to make some changes.
