A Daily Walk

Thought For The Week 424

There are many well-known passages in the brief, fascinating book of Micah.  One which never fails to challenge is, “…what does [Yahweh] require of you But to do justly, To love mercy, And to walk humbly with your [Elohim]” [Micah 6:8]?  It’s a succinct statement, made to answer the question, What should I bring before Yahweh? Micah cries, “Should I come before him with burnt offerings, with year-old calves? Would [Yahweh] be pleased with thousands of rams or with ten thousand streams of oil? Should I give my firstborn for my transgression…” [Micah 6:6-7, italics added]?  What an extravagant, expensive offering that would be; only the very rich could afford it!  But, no! Yahweh is looking for just, merciful men and women, willing to walk with Him in humility.

Always, when pondering these requirements, I ask myself if I act and react justly when faced with the circumstances of life, and if I love mercy.  Mostly, it’s fairly easy to be just and merciful when the situation concerns those I love, but I’ve had to learn this requirement reaches into all my dealings, even my relationship with myself!  Do you treat yourself justly?  Do you show mercy towards yourself when you’ve ‘messed up’?

I’ve discovered that knowing the ’back story’ to the situation or person I’m ‘judging’ often challenges my concept of justice!  We have differing [and changing] opinions about what constitutes justice and mercy, but only Yahweh’s really matter!  He’s the One Who can teach us how to act justly and love mercy.  ’Love mercy’ can also be translated ‘love kindness’, as in “…love [and diligently practice] kindness (compassion)…” [Amplified Bible].

‘Walking’ describes an active, routine habit with an ordinary rate of progress.  Walking with Yahweh is similar. It’s more than the closeness of prayer times, the intimacy of meditation, or the soaring blessings of fellowship, as wonderful as these are.  It’s an awareness of His nearness even when prayer/meditation times seem dry and tired, or the daily round feels humdrum.  It’s a constant perception of His Presence in the commonplace of daily living.  It’s drawing our life source, support and courage from His unlimited resources.
