Writing to believers in Rome, the apostle Paul entreated, “I beseech you…by the mercies of [Yahweh], that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto [Yahweh], which is your reasonable service” (Romans 12:1). What a passionate (and huge) request! This congregation would have been familiar with the principle of sacrifice, for animals were regularly offered in the Temple in Jerusalem. But none of them were alive! What could the apostle possibly mean by a living sacrifice? How could such an act be considered sensible and based on good judgement?
Personal sacrifice is a recurring theme in the New Testament. In fact, all the early apostles taught its importance having learned it from Yahshua. We’re required to offer ourselves to Yahweh, making a decisive dedication of our bodies for service, presenting all our members and faculties as a living sacrifice. This includes my voice, mouth, lips, hands, feet, intellect, and any talents He may have given me. That’s a seriously daunting demand. Quite simply, it’s everything, and it’s considered a reasonable expectation!
Are you feeling overwhelmed by this? Perhaps dismayed or scared? Don’t be, because Yahweh doesn’t expect everything at once, it would be impossible. He accepts who and what we are as we begin our walk with Yahshua. He’ll ask a little here, a lot there, and make demands as need arises. As we learn to yield to Him (it’s called laying down our lives) He’ll take us up and align us to His perfect will. Yahshua said, “If anyone wishes to follow Me [as My disciple], he must deny himself [set aside selfish interests] and take up his cross [expressing a willingness to endure whatever may come] and follow Me…” (Mark 8:34, Amplified Bible). He also said, “If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it” (Matthew 16:25, New Living Translation).
Be encouraged not to kowtow to the world, adapting to its fads, fancies, and superficiality. As you lay down your life, you’ll be transformed by the renewal of your mind as Yahweh fills you with new ideals and attitudes!

Break out into shouts of joy, ruins of Jerusalem.
Yahweh will comfort his people.
He will reclaim Jerusalem.
Yahweh will show his holy power to all the nations.
All the ends of the earth will see the salvation of our Elohim.
