The extraordinary progress made by humanity in the last 100 years is incredible. My grandfather was a chauffer when only the rich could afford a car, and most ‘traffic’ on the roads was horse drawn! Whilst I remember watching the first men land on the moon! We’re living in a progressive, exciting generation, aren’t we? We’re certainly living in the time when “…knowledge shall be increased” [Daniel 12:4]! In view of this, I was startled [and interested] to read A.W. Tozer’s assertion, “Degeneration is the plight of mankind today” [italics added].
Tozer points out that humanity fell when it lost a right concept of Yahweh. He describes the question “Did God really say…?” [Genesis 3:1] as being “equivalent to sneaking behind [Yahweh’s] back and casting a reflection on [His] goodness and character.” Tozer states, sadly, that as long as Adam and Eve trusted Yahweh everything was ‘all right’, but as soon as Satan “threw a question mark” into Eve’s mind, a progressive degeneration began. When humanity loses “confidence in the character of [Yahweh]” continues Tozer, then it “begins its downward plunge”! I start to see clearly how today’s amazing technological advances are teamed so closely with burgeoning lawlessness and iniquitous living.
Salvation is the birth of a restored image of the Almighty, which must lead to a restoration of our knowledge of Him and increased confidence in Him. The importance of this process can’t be overemphasised. The serious undermining of fatherhood over the decades has led to many having a warped opinion of the idea of ‘our Father’, and an inability to relate the thought to caring provision, loving oversight and lifelong support. I believe this, too, is part of the devilish plan which began in Eden with the question mark.
Yahshua is so like His Father that if we know Him we will know Yahweh [John 14:9]. Yahweh’s not fazed by current trends! He gave His Son so that He could have a restored creation, and He wants that creation to have restored trust and confidence in Him. He’s willing for that to take as much time as you need, but it’s essential for each of us to open our hearts for the process.
