Deuteronomy is a beautiful book. Written by Moses it describes the relationship of love between Yahweh and His people, with emphatic emphasis on the covenant He made with them. It’s the Old Testament book most quoted in the New. I particularly enjoy the final chapters where Moses is obviously preparing them for his imminent departure and their entry into the promised land. Chapter 33 is a glorious record of his final blessing on the people he’d served for so long. He opens with a startling comment: “Yahweh came from Sinai…with myriads of holy ones, at his right hand a fiery law for them” [v2, Lexham English Bible]. An extraordinary addition to the already spectacular description in Exodus 19:18-19!
The magnificent climax to the blessings of Deuteronomy 33 may be claimed as a heritage by all who, through Yahshua, are children of Yahweh. “There is none like [Yahweh]…Who rides the heavens to your help, And through the skies in His majestic glory…the eternal God is your refuge and dwelling place, And underneath are the everlasting arms” [vv’s 26-27, Amplified Bible]. Notice how close Yahweh is to His people! He’s described as being above us with His divine power, while underneath are His everlasting arms. He’s before us in that He drives the enemy ‘before you’ [v27], and around us as our shield [v29]. Charles Spurgeon describes these verses as representing Yahweh “being all around us so that we are encompassed with [Him]—with the glorious presence of His mighty love. He is above, beneath and all around us.”
Are you feeling safe? Protected? Yahweh never neglects His responsibilities! Check out the daily sunrise and the recurring seasons. What He has said He will do; what He’s promised He’ll provide. He’ll never forsake us, forget us or let us down, and He makes everything beautiful in His own time. Moses defined Yahweh’s people as being in His hands and assembled at His feet [v3]. We’re secure in the ‘glorious presence of His mighty love’. “…he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. [Yahweh] watches over you” [Psalm 121:3-5].
