Recently, Britain’s long-lasting 'Post Office scandal' (*) hit the UK news with renewed energy and widespread outrage. Last week, in an unprecedented move, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced that new legislation would be introduced so all those wrongly convicted could be “swiftly exonerated and compensated”! All debts to be cancelled, cried the media! Sunak wasn’t, of course, considering bearing the financial burden himself, despite being the richest PM ever to live in Downing Street!
Millions in our world are facing debts they can never repay. Sin reigns, and results of its power rampage across our TV screens, shocking and distressing us. There’s also the unseen, unheard mountain of wrongdoing created by ordinary people living ordinary lives. Until we’ve accepted Yahshua as Saviour we’re all sinners. The apostle Paul described the build-up of unrepented, unforgiven sin in each life as a ‘certificate of debt’, pointing out we’re all born with a sinful, carnal nature. This renders us ‘dead’, weighed down by offenses committed against the Holy One. Shockingly, there’s no way we can pay off the debt ourselves!
However, there is Someone who can! The apostle Paul cries in triumph, “He erased the certificate of debt, with its obligations, that was against us and opposed to us, and has taken it away by nailing it to the cross” [Colossians 2:14]. Expanding on this thought J. Oswald Sanders writes, “He alone has redeemed us and discharged the debt of our sin, weighing out the ransom price, not in silver or gold, but in crimson drops of precious blood. He nailed the receipted bill to His cross.” What a picture to ponder! Our High Priest cancels the debt for all who come to Him in sadness and repentance - and it’s free! At least, it’s free for us. The original price was horrendous.
What did it cost Yahshua to purchase the right to cancel our debt and cleanse our sin? Read Isaiah 53 prayerfully, asking Yahweh to open your understanding to the pain recorded there. Reconsider records of Gethsemane, look again at the Judgement Hall, imagine the scene at Calvary. It cost more than we can understand; I’m filled with awe, gratitude, and love. All my debts are cancelled!

(*) The British Post Office scandal is a miscarriage of justice which, between 1999 and 2015, saw over 900 subpostmasters prosecuted for theft, false accounting, and fraud for shortfalls at their branches when these shortfalls were in fact due to errors of the Post Office's Horizon accounting software.
While some subpostmasters almost immediately noticed the new system reporting false shortfalls, sometimes for thousands of pounds, the Post Office insisted that the system was robust and, when shortfalls occurred, prosecuted the subpostmasters or forced them to make up the amount. The impact of court cases, criminal convictions, imprisonment, loss of livelihood and homes, debt and bankruptcy took a heavy toll on victims and their families, leading to stress, illness, divorce and, in at least four cases, suicide.
As of January 2024, most of those wrongly convicted are still waiting to have their convictions overturned, the public inquiry is ongoing, and the Metropolitan Police is investigating the Post Office for potential fraud offences.
