Anointed To Help

Thought For The Week 343 By Val Warsop

One Sabbath, in the synagogue in Nazareth, a young man was asked to read the scripture portion for the day.  Looking down at the scroll, He began, “The Spirit of the Sovereign [Yahweh] is on me, because [Yahweh] has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the broken-hearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners” [Isaiah 61:1].  Handing the scroll back to the minister, He sat down quietly and everyone watched Him intently. “Today as you listen, this Scripture has been fulfilled” [Luke 4:18-21], stated the reader, who was a local carpenter.  What did it mean to the astonished people of that small, insignificant town?  It meant that Yahshua had just declared Himself to be the long-awaited Messiah!

The prophets spoke often about the promised Messiah, and two distinct descriptions are woven through the Old Testament; one shows Him as kingly, the other as suffering.  With hindsight we understand that on His initial visit to our world He fulfilled the prophecies of suffering and did the work for which He was anointed.  His second coming will reveal Him as the Kingly Messiah!

A close examination of Isaiah 61:1 reveals that Yahshua was anointed to bring good news, offering pardon and forgiveness; bind up the wounds of the broken-hearted, setting free those who are oppressed, downtrodden or crushed by tragedy; and offer healing and restoration to the sick.  To do this He needed to be acquainted with the totality of human misery. He was ‘a man of suffering, and familiar with pain’ [Isaiah 53:3].

He understood grief from personal experiences; He knew weakness and depression.  In Gethsemane His sorrow was so acute its weight alone almost killed Him.  Later He was tormented, bullied, mocked, abused, spat on; humiliated, rejected, abandoned, tyrannised, disfigured; thrashed within an inch of His life.  It was the price of His anointing; it enables Him to meet every need of the human heart and life forever.  We may have to step out of our comfort zones to find Him and access His divine power to heal and transform, but He is still anointed to help, still available to be found.
