Betrayed By Mouth?

Thought For The Week 368

In his record of Yahshua’s life, the apostle Matthew gives us a remarkable glimpse of Yahweh’s entire plan, from Genesis to Revelation.  He binds his record to the ancient prophecies, referring to them around sixty times.  He presents huge blocks of Yahshua’s teaching as five great sermons, weaving the story around them.  It’s an outstanding, apostolic work and I often think how impoverished we would be had he not taken time to share with us.

Matthew’s descriptions show Yahshua as a fearless, passionate speaker, willing and able to challenge the hypocrisy of the religious hierarchy, boldly confronting their insincerities. When He delivered and healed a man who was blind and dumb, they accused Him of casting out demons by the power of Beelzebub, Prince of demons.  Yahshua was angry and reacted forcefully – read about it in Matthew 12:22-37.  He ended His censure, “I tell you that on the day of judgment people will have to account for every careless word they speak.  For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned” [vvs 36-37].  This is a very sobering statement.  I wonder what constitutes a ‘careless’ word?  Different translators give us ‘useless’, ‘empty’, ‘idle’, ‘unimportant’.  The Greek word can also mean ‘thoughtless’ or ‘profitless’.

Yahshua was very clear about the horrors of hell and quick to warn people of the dangers.  He gave His life sacrificially to save us from all its agony and terror.  His warning about the power of the spoken word should be taken seriously!  Are there any clues as to how we can speak acceptably?  I believe so.  Yahshua said very clearly, “The mouth speaks what the heart is full of” [v34].  Therefore, in order for my words to be acceptable, I must take notice of the things that fill my heart.  It is of primary importance to attend to its spiritual and emotional health, lest it causes my mouth to betray and condemn me.

We could all join with the Psalmist and pray, “May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to You, Yahweh” [Psalm 19:14].  It’s important!
