Writing to the church in Ephesus, Paul urged them to make “the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.” How that echoes in our hearts as we consider the troubled times in which we live. His advice is not finished, however: “Therefore do not be foolish…” he begs [Ephesians 5:16]. In his commentary on Ephesians and in light of this scripture, Dr. B.F. Westcott [1825-1901], implores, “because the danger is great and the need for walking carefully is urgent…do not fall to a lower level”. Musing on this same thought Amy Carmichael wrote, “There is always a pull upon us; the great enemy wants to pull our thoughts and words and doings down to a lower level. Our own inner weakness, and sometimes cowardice or love of ease, sides with him; so the pull is tremendous.”
Have you felt that pull in recent weeks or months? Have you wondered where Yahweh is while the world hurts? Or, perhaps, why He is allowing pain and trouble in your own life? Have you been unsettled, disturbed, confused? Despite everything he went through, King David came to an exceptional conclusion: “[Yahweh’s] way is perfect…and he makes my way perfect”, he wrote [Psalm 18:30-32]. But notice that he did say ‘perfect’ – not easy! It's important to remember Yahweh said, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways” [Isaiah 55:8].
Paul’s personal experience showed that he refused to ‘fall to a lower level’ even when everything seemed against him. He told Timothy that after his arrest, “At my first defence, no one came to my support, but everyone deserted me…” How difficult that must have been! However, he was overjoyed to be able to add, “But [Yahshua] stood at my side and gave me strength…” [2 Timothy 4:16-17]
We, too, have the joyous assurance that Yahshua will be by our side, no matter what the future may bring. But because ‘the danger is great and the need for walking carefully is urgent’, let us, by His grace, resist the ‘pull’ to a lower level, staying focused on the promises in His precious Word and the knowledge of His proven faithfulness.
