Have you ever been blessed when reading the Psalms? Or helped? Comforted? Challenged? Instructed? Enlightened? I’m fairly confident your answer will be a resounding “Yes!” I’m equally confident Yahweh’s people of every generation and from every place have found everyday life reflected there. This wonderful book is a truly amazing resource, speaking frequently to the deepest needs of the human heart. Yet, first and foremost, the psalms are a hymnbook, a collection of ancient songs that would’ve been sung in the Temple. Some are still sung today in various forms and with differing music, causing hearts to respond with joy, hope, worship or, sometimes, repentance.
Asaph, a contemporary of King David, was a skilled musician, a singer, songwriter and prophet. David appointed him to be the chief musician over the Levites who were selected to minister before the Ark of the Covenant and glorify Yahweh (1 Chronicles 16:4-5). In Psalm 50, Asaph begins with a powerful celebration of Yahweh’s power and omnipotence (vv. 1-6)! Inspired, he then bursts into prophecy, and I’m fascinated to see he kept the word as part of the song. Perhaps today’s songwriters could learn something from this! We would certainly have been impoverished had Asaph not done so!
“Call on me in a day of trouble; I will rescue you, and you will honour me” (50:15), cried Yahweh through Asaph. What a simple, straightforward offer - “Give me a call!” With a comforting, priceless promise, “I will rescue you.” Do you ever feel reticent to call on Yahweh? Maybe feeling as though you don’t deserve His help, or you’re always bothering Him, or your trouble is of your own making, or one of any number of other difficulties? Actually, Yahweh adds no qualifications – just call and He’ll come!
“Prayer in time of trouble,” writes Charles Spurgeon, “is a sweet form of worship.” A small child in trouble runs first to the parent who loves him. Running to Yahweh when we’re in trouble is a way of acknowledging His love for us and honours Him - a sweet form of worship! We can trust Him with our distress!
