Can You Believe It?

Thought For The Week 402

Yahshua took His close friends, Peter, James and John, up a high mountain, wanting to be alone with them.  Something astonishing happened there!  His clothes became dazzlingly white, brighter than anything they had seen before.  While they were processing this, two men appeared and, instinctively, the friends knew them to be Moses and Elijah.  What an event! Unsurprisingly, they were terrified; whatever was happening [Mark 9:1-12]?

After this momentous and stunning event, they returned to a chaotic scene.  A huge crowd had gathered around the remaining disciples and a furious discussion was in progress.  When the crowd saw Yahshua, they “…ran to greet him. He asked them, ‘What are you arguing with them about?’” [Mark 9:15-16].  It seems a father had brought his son to Yahshua for healing, but the disciples had been unable to help.  When the man had repeated his distressing tale, Yahshua said, “Everything is possible for the one who believes” [verse 23].  The grieving father cried, “I do believe; help my unbelief!” Such an honest statement.  Have you ever felt like that?

Believing in the power of Yahshua, having faith in His Word and promises, can be very challenging.  Yahshua often spoke of the power of faith, and we’re challenged by Him to “Have faith in God” [Mark 11:22].  But how do we do that?  It’s one of the great questions.  The honest father who had both belief and unbelief, did receive healing for his son.  So, is it a fact that we can believe and yet need help with our unbelief?  We see evidence of Yahweh’s work, care, provision and protection all the time, and yet, often, we do have this mixture of belief and unbelief.

I’ve come to understand the necessity to rest in trust, for trust works alongside belief.  Yahweh “seeks in every possible way to convince you that He is able and most willing to keep His promises”, writes Andrew Murray.  Yahshua trusted Yahweh through the agony of unrighteous judgment, excruciating punishment and ignominious death.  His trust culminated in the glory of the resurrection.  Yahweh will never force His blessings on us, but if we trust Him, in every situation, we’ll find these blessings unfolding around us.
