Before this month ends, the UK will be facing major change; the nation will leave the EU! Will it make a difference? Are you nervous about it or happy or relieved? Or perhaps simply disenchanted with the whole process? It will happen, we will move on, we live in a changing world. Not all changes take so long to implement, in fact the rate of change can be so rapid that we are out of breath and confused just trying to adjust. For example, when I first began driving I could buy sixteen litres of petrol for the cost of one litre today! Sometimes I think the world has gone completely crazy! But then I remember the great stabilising power, my beloved Yahshua, whom the Bible tells me “is the same yesterday and today and forever” [Hebrews 13:8].
He stands in the centre of our unstable world and we are assured that all that He was in the past, He is in the present, and He will be in the future. He has always been extraordinary! His close friend wrote that, “Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made” [John 1:3]. Nothing takes Him by surprise, nothing that we ‘discover’ is a mystery to Him. He is as comfortable in a 21st century world as He was in the Garden of Eden. The Messiah of ‘yesterday’ is well able to take care of all our ‘yesterdays’, quietly competent to cleanse away our sin, heal the pain of things that haunt or paralyse us, mend broken hearts, and restore us. The Messiah of ‘today’ will take care of our moments; guiding our footsteps, untangling problems, unfastening fetters, carrying burdens, hearing prayers.
Yahshua, who is ‘the same forever’ is more than able to take care of our all tomorrows, and even to dissolve all our uncertainties about the future. “Fears of the future can cripple us in meeting the demands of the present” writes Oswald Sanders. “But in the midst of life’s uncertainties stands One who is utterly dependable.” I’d like to encourage you to “Remember always, as the centre of everything, [Messiah Yahshua]” [2 Timothy 2:8, J.B. Phillips].
