Does Yahweh Get Hurt?

Thought For The Week 397

Yahweh is a passionate, emotional Being.  We read of Him rejoicing, singing, getting angry, being sorrowful, but do we ever think of Him as feeling hurt?  I confess, I never had until recently.  Through His prophet, Yahweh told Israelite exiles they would remember, “I was crushed by their promiscuous hearts that turned away from me” [Ezekiel 6:9].  Crushed? Startled I checked the Hebrew word, which is translated variously as broken, crushed, hurt, broken-hearted.

It’s sobering to know that Yahweh can be hurt and broken by our careless rejection of His love and His commands.  He had offered His love to Israel, and sealed a commitment to them, through covenant at Sinai.  His covenant was binding, not only on the Nation, but also on Him.  Israel was very precious to Him, and His love gave them the power to hurt Him. He was connected to them, so their rejection was painful. We all know how dreadful it feels when we are betrayed by someone we love.

When Yahweh sent Yahshua to redeem humanity from sin, He did it because His creation was precious to Him.  Yahshua died for us because we are precious. His blood was the blood of the New Covenant promised by Yahweh through Jeremiah [Jeremiah 31:31-34].  When I acknowledge Yahshua’s sacrifice and accept the glorious gift of forgiveness of sin and eternal life, I enter into a relationship with Yahweh that is binding.  Carelessness of lifestyle, rejection of His commands, selfishness, thoughtlessness all have the power to hurt our beloved Father.  When we hurt Him, Yahshua is also affected, because they are ONE!

Zephaniah, prophesying about the end time, declared that Yahweh “…will rejoice over you with gladness. He will bring you quietness with His love. He will delight in you with shouts of joy” [Zephaniah 3:17].  A beautiful picture of a Creator savouring the completion of all He has promised.  How special it would be if each of us were able to give Him just a little of this blessing along the way.  We can do it through our obedience, faithfulness and love.
