Don't Do It!

Thought For The Week 442

Rich, famous, exalted, and widely known as king of kings, Nebuchadnezzar decided to build an illustrious golden statue, ninety feet high and nine feet wide [27 x 2.7 metres]. The dedication of the image was a huge event in Babylon, with compulsory attendance for all nobles and important leaders in the empire.  A huge orchestra was detailed to provide music.  Everyone was ordered to bow down and worship the statue when the music played; non-compliance would command a death sentence.  Since Israel was strictly charged not to bow down to idols, three observant, Hebrew friends simply didn’t!  They got into terrible, but exciting, trouble as the death penalty was enforced [Daniel 3].

“The world,” writes Charles Spurgeon, “like Nebuchadnezzar, expects us all to follow its fashions and obey its rules.  The god of this world is the devil, and he claims implicit obedience.  Sin in some form or other is the image Satan sets up and requires us to serve.”  Today, the word ‘idol’ (at least, in the West) inevitably refers to a pop, movie, or sports star, and there are multitudes who worship!   Then there are things which, whilst not so obviously as idolatrous as Nebuchadnezzar’s idol, nevertheless draw us in until we’re giving them time, attention and admiration; we feel they’re a ‘must have’!  What ‘music’ does the world play to draw you in to worship?

This world may demand we yield to its dictates, but as followers of Yahshua we should refuse to do so.  The three young men in Babylon told Nebuchadnezzar, “…we want to make it clear to you, Your Majesty, that we will never serve your gods or worship the gold statue you have set up” [Daniel 3:18].  Nebuchadnezzar was outraged and had them hurled into a burning furnace so hot the soldiers who carried out the order dropped dead. After the flames settled, it was obvious there were four men in the heart of the fire. Yahweh hadn’t saved them from the ordeal but had sent Yahshua to meet them in it.  After they left the furnace, their hair wasn’t singed, their clothes weren’t damaged, and they didn’t even smell of smoke! Yahweh is amazing! Make a stand!  He’ll be there for you!
