Comic Relief is a British charity that aims to raise money and awareness for good causes all around the world. In support of the charity a Red Nose Day event, which culminates in a live TV broadcast, is now held every year. This year the event raised in excess of £34m, with the final total expected to increase. Many people worked incredibly hard, giving away time, energy and huge chunks of their lives to encourage the giving. As I pondered on the extraordinary amount of effort and selflessness involved, it seemed inevitable that my mind should turn to the giving which Yahshua advocates.
He said, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me” [Matthew 16:24]. In effect, He’s saying that would-be disciples must give up all right to their own lives. Give them away! The apostle John was close to Yahshua, loved Him, learned from Him, and later wrote, “…because He laid down His life for us…we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren” [1 John 3:16]. This isn’t a once-a-year marathon give away, but a steady, daily giving up of our own lives in order to do the will of Yahweh and serve our Master. It requires our total availability in heart, mind, home, and finance; the disciplined surrender of the whole person. Yahshua demonstrated this throughout His lifetime, and we must learn from His example.
This world is hurting. All around we see those whom Yahshua would help if He were here. He is here, in His people, and as we learn to give ourselves away, He will meet the needy. Yahweh said, “If you do away with the yoke of oppression, with the pointing finger and malicious talk, and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday” [Isaiah 58:9-10]. Yahweh wants us to give ourselves to promoting harmony in church, family, workplace, college, and school. He wants us to spend ourselves in service to those in trouble. In this way our lights shine in the darkness, and Yahshua is lifted up.
