Many of us are familiar with the beautiful poem, ‘Footprints’, its story has resonated in millions of hearts since publication. Songs have been written, posters, bookmarks, notebooks, and cards created, and the immense comfort of the picture it shares has been of untold blessing. In brief, as she walks along the seashore, the author sees snapshots of different times in her life, noticing footprints in the sand during the recap of her journey. Sometimes there are two sets, but at the most difficult times, strangely, there is only one. Puzzled, she asked Yahshua, “Why, when I needed you most, have you not been there for me?” Sweetly, Yahshua reassured her that the times “…when you have seen only one set…is when I carried you.”
People ask if this precious thought is a scriptural concept. I have wondered so myself; I believe it is. In the opening chapter of Deuteronomy, where Moses is reflecting on forty years of travel, he reminds Israel, “And you saw in the wilderness how [Yahweh] carried you as a man carries his son all along the way you travelled until you reached this place” [Deuteronomy 1:31]. We all experience times when we feel as though we’re in the ‘wilderness’ of life. How encouraging to know that, in those times, it’s Yahweh’s ‘style’ to carry His chosen ones!
Yahweh has plans for each of us, a ‘this place’ where He is leading, and when the way is rough or troublesome, He is perfectly able to carry us! Not as a burden to be borne, but as a beloved child is carried by a caring father. What lovely pictures that inspires! Little ones being bounced on broad, strong shoulders, or snuggled into the safe crook of an arm, or even buttoned into a coat for warmth and comfort.
When the storms of life are raging, troubles sweeping through, or heaviness of heart is crushing, let’s remember He said, “When you go through deep waters, I will be with you…through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown…” [Isaiah 43:2 New Living Translation]; He will carry you!
