Impeccable Timing

Thought For The Week 363

Moses had been shepherding his father-in-law’s sheep for longer than he cared to remember.  Looking for pasture he had led them to ‘the far side of the wilderness’ [Exodus 3:1], to Mount Sinai, little knowing how important this place was to become.  There he had had a mind-blowing encounter with Yahweh Himself [Exodus 3:4-4:17].  One of the last things Yahweh told Moses that day was that his brother Aaron was already on the way to meet him [4:14].  As Moses returned to his family in Midian, he had a lot on his mind; he was about to set out on a long, arduous journey.  It was 40 years since he had been to Egypt, did he really want to go back?  Would Jethro agree and allow him to take his family?  What preparations did he need to make? Where would he meet Aaron? And what would happen when he arrived in Egypt?  As the story unfolds over the next few chapters in Exodus, it is both incredible and spectacular!

Recently, a frequently missed facet of this story caught my attention. Despite the return journey to Midian, the unspecified time needed to prepare for the trip, and the disturbing stopover at Goshen, Moses met with Aaron back at Sinai!  For Aaron this was a journey of around 435 miles [700 kms]; for Moses an unspecified length of time!  Yet what incredible, impeccable timing!  Only Yahweh could have coordinated this encounter, endowing precious significance on the mountain and earmarking it as a phenomenal meeting place.

Those serving Yahweh will surely recognise this experience.  His timing in our lives is breathtaking, sometimes dependent [it seems] on mere seconds, “chance” decisions, or unexpected encounters.  “This I know: [Yahweh] is for me” [Psalm 56:9], should be our theme song!  He has the future – mine and yours – in His hands!  When the darkness gathers, remember He created the darkness [Isaiah 45:7]; He can see in the dark, and He promised to be with us.  Deep waters or rivers of difficulty won’t drown us, fires of oppression won’t burn us up [Isaiah 43:2], for He has plans! We can always trust Him!
