Is It Your Mess?

Thought For The Week 337 By Val Warsop

My early years were spent in an idyllic country setting.  We lived in a tiny, basic country cottage where the weekly rent was considerably less than we pay for a bar of chocolate today!  My father, finally demobbed after WW2, was home at last; he even had a job.  We were very blessed!  I remember ration books and austerity, and carefully using up every scrap of everything.  I remember mealtimes, with prayerful thanks for food on the table.  I remember nightly baths in the deep butler sink in the kitchen, while Daddy shaved, using the tiny kitchen mirror because we had no bathroom.  I remember serious, grown-up conversations about always asking Yahshua for help, and how His wisdom was needed to maximise the small, weekly wage.  I remember Him being thanked all the time for everything, and my innocent confidence in His ability to take care of us.

Many years later I was surprised by an unexpected confession from my Dad.  It was the dawn of the era of the Hire Purchase Agreement and, knowing the church building needed, but couldn’t afford, an extra heater, Dad went ahead and purchased one.  When the first monthly payment became due, he confidently lifted up the bill to Yahweh, asking for His help.  To his astonishment the reply was, “You bought it, you pay for it!” Dad had created a personal ‘mess’ because he didn’t ‘wait’ on Yahweh [Psalm 27:14]!

Writing about Elijah at the brook Cherith, F.B. Meyer reflects on the prophet’s ‘patient and faithful spirit’ as the brook ‘dwindled to only a silver thread’ eventually becoming ‘completely dry’.  It was only then that Yahweh told Elijah to ‘go at once to Zarephath’ [1 Kings 17:2-8].  Meyer writes, “Most of us would have become anxious and tired, and would have made other plans long before [Yahweh] spoke…pacing back and forth on the withering grass, worrying about our predicament…we would have devised some plan…asked [Yahweh] to bless it, and headed elsewhere."

It's easy to create our own ‘messes’, and while Yahweh often extricates us from them, how much more glorifying to Him, and life-enriching for us, if we learn to wait patiently for His perfect Will.
