Many of us are prone to find music and songs from a lifetime of memories stirring unbidden and singing in our hearts. Something which, frequently, sings softly within me is the refrain from ‘King of my life, I crown Thee now’ by Jennie Evelyn Hussey [1874-1958], a hymn I’ve known and loved all my life.
Lest I forget Gethsemane,
Lest I forget Thine agony
Lest I forget Thy love for me,
Lead me to Calvary.
As we approach another Passover, I find my heart turning again to those final hours that led Yahshua to Calvary. The wonderful last evening He spent with His disciples, when He washed feet, ate a meal, instituted the new covenant, ministered peace, comfort and encouragement to His friends, and sent Judas out, despite knowing of his traitorous plans. Yahshua knew exactly what terrible fate awaited Him, yet all evening He was calm, loving and utterly selfless. Only when they went to Gethsemane do we have a glimpse of the horror with which He faced it. There, over about an hour, He wrestled with His agony, alternately begging His Father to release Him then agreeing to continue. His despair was so great He began to sweat blood, a very rare condition activated by extreme stress!
When Yahshua finally found peace in Gethsemane and the angels had ministered to Him, He was arrested and taken away for a parody of a trial. He was misrepresented, mocked, humiliated, abused, flogged, and illegally condemned to death. The way to the cross was horrendous, but the suffering wasn’t over. Rejected by His peers, emotionally depleted, physically exhausted, His head and body pounding with pain, struggling for every breath, Yahshua had to face the knowledge that, for an Israelite, to be hanged was a disgrace, and was a sign of being under Yahweh’s curse [Deuteronomy 21:22-23].
We know, and rejoice greatly, that this appalling crime culminated in Yahshua’s resurrection and the gift of salvation being freely available to everyone. But ‘lest we forget’ His self-sacrificing and incredible love for us, it’s good, occasionally, to trace the steps which led Him to Calvary, to ponder a while, and say, ‘thank you’!
