Make Every Effort

Thought For The Week 399

Peter, fisherman and disciple, is a much-loved character.  He’s vocal, passionate, full of questions and [best of all] makes mistakes!  His humanity endears him to generations.  An amazing change took place when he was baptised with the Holy Spirit. He emerged as a powerful leader, with a quickened spiritual understanding and a wonderful gift to preach [Acts 2].  Almost breathlessly, we follow him into the initial days of the early church, watching with astonishment all the extraordinary things that happen.  He becomes a key figure as the message of salvation begins to unfold and the church takes shape.

In later life, Peter wrote letters, two of which have been preserved for us.  The first was written to people who’d been ‘scattered’ across a number of Roman provinces, possibly due to persecution.  The second appears to be addressed to believers generally, but may be a follow-up.  It’s certainly a second letter for the recipients [2 Peter 3:1].  I find both fascinating, inspiring and helpful.  I’m fascinated by the growth of his ministry, the depth of his teaching, and the love that radiates from him.

I’m always inspired by, “For His divine power has given us everything that is needful for a life of piety, as we advance in the knowledge of him who called us…” [2 Peter 1:3; 20th Century NT].  I first ‘discovered’ this verse when struggling with the demands of holiness and sanctification.  I was thrilled with the idea that growing in the knowledge of Yahshua would release everything I needed to maintain this experience. I was awed that it’d be released through the divine power!  The more we set our hearts to learn about Yahshua, the more we’ll be enabled to walk in the holiness required by His Father, and actually to share in the divine nature [v4]!

“For this very reason,” writes Peter, “make every effort to add to your faith…” goodness, knowledge, self-control, endurance, godliness, brotherly affection and love [see verses 5-7].  We’re not saved by our own works, but salvation must inspire diligent effort towards a growth in righteousness and love. Allow Yahshua to be the centre of your life, the focus of your love, the joy of your heart.
