Recently our fellowship was asked to pray for those children who’re currently taking SATs, finishing primary school, and heading for comprehensives; and for our young people who’re sitting for GCSEs, or A levels, or choosing the next steps for training. “So many decisions,” I murmured. Life is full of such moments: decision making, life changing moments. As I mused, I remembered the apostle Peter encouraged us “to live the remaining time in the flesh no longer for human desires, but for [Yahweh’s] will” [1 Peter 4:2]. It’s sobering to understand that from the little ones in primary school to senior citizens like me, none of us know how much time we have left.
Yahshua was surprised when His parents told Him they’d been looking for Him for days. “Didn’t you know that I had to be concerning myself with my Father’s affairs?” He asked them [Luke2:49, Complete Jewish Bible]. He was 12 years old! We’re never too young [or too old] to be thinking about Yahweh’s ‘affairs’ and asking about His will. You see, even as you’re reading this the rest of your life is passing by. “Every moment we are here,” writes Charles Spurgeon, “we are travelling at an immense rate, speeding onward to the great goal of death.” What an arresting and startling statement!
Are you sincere about the things of Yahweh? Have you made that immense decision to follow Him unreservedly? Are you hesitating over something you feel sure He’s asking of you? Remember, all the while we’re making our minds up, time is slipping away.
Being in partnership with Yahweh [see 1 Corinthians 3:9] means being available to Him always. In my experience, this availability is made up of thousands of ‘small’ things worked into the fabric of everyday living. A phone call, a smile, a text, a prayer, a helping hand, a chat with a stranger, are just a few ways Yahweh may wish to use you today. “The way to do a great deal is to keep on doing little,” reflects Spurgeon. “The way to do nothing is to be continually resolving that we will do everything.”
