Not Bread Alone

Thought For The Week 418

Immediately after being baptised in water by His cousin John, Yahshua was led into the wilderness by the Holy Spirit. He was there for 40 days and nights being tempted by the Devil, who’d achieved nothing!  At the end of the fast the Devil, knowing Yahshua would be hungry, taunted Him, jeering, “If you are the Son of Yahweh, command that these stones be made bread…”  Yahshua fired back, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of [Yahweh]’” [Matthew 4:1-4].  Yahshua was very familiar with His Father’s Word, having studied it throughout His life, and this quotation is found in Deuteronomy.

In Deuteronomy Moses is preparing Israel for his coming death, reminding them of their deliverance from Egypt, Yahweh’s care for them during their subsequent wanderings, and the absolute necessity of keeping all His commands.  In one sermon he reminded them, “He humbled you by letting you go hungry; then he gave you manna to eat, which you and your ancestors had not known, so that you might learn that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of Yahweh [Deuteronomy 8:3, Christian Standard Bible].  What an interesting concept.  Yahweh knew from the start how He would feed a million people in the desert – what an undertaking! – but He let them get hungry first, before arranging a steady supply of manna for 40 years.

I wonder why Moses concluded the delay was to humble Israel?  Had they, perhaps, been getting complacent about miracles?  Taking Yahweh for granted?  A humble attitude understands dependence, and dependence promotes trust.  “It is a wonderful thing to be delivered from materialism,” writes Charles Spurgeon, “to be freed from the notion that things are absolutely essential for the accomplishment of the divine purpose…I am not to be provided for merely by money. [Yahweh] will somehow provide for me and I can leave all care about the means to Him.”

We’re living in uncertain times, with much trouble and distress globally. We’re all affected in differing ways, but Yahweh can be trusted!  He’ll not only provide for us, but will arrange all the details flawlessly.
