Otherworldly

Thought For The Week 495

There was a new TV programme being shown, a mystery series set in the mid twentieth century.  I might enjoy this, I mused, as I settled down to watch.  But within a few minutes, I’d switched off, objecting to the swearing.  A couple of weeks later, wondering if I’d been too hasty, I decided to try again, but very soon I was deleting the recording.  Why do they need to use such language?  I ask myself.  “It’s realistic - the way life is today”, reply my friends. Do I even belong in this world, I wonder?  The short answer is a definite, “No!”   I just can’t forget Yahshua said of His disciples, “…they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world” [John 17:14, italics added].

Somewhere inside me, there’s a place of peace that is clean,  pure and holy. Called salvation, it’s a beautiful gift, given by a special Friend, Who paid an exorbitant price for it.  I’m always aware of it, and if anything happens to disturb its serenity, I make adjustments!  You see, I’ve learned that trying to familiarise myself with the world’s decreasing standards tends to desensitise me, numbing my mind until they don’t seem so awful.  Bad language isn’t the only disturber of my peace, nor the only reason I’d adjust my listening, reading, browsing, or other ways of interaction.  Yes, I do need to understand the world in which I live, but I won’t do it at the cost of my inner peace.

Today’s world is a troubled place where, robbed of hope, people act outrageously! News items constantly shock me, and I realise some people only have thought for themselves, with no regard for anyone else. How empty, selfish, even pitiful, that seems.  Yahshua came to change things for humanity, and to bring peace.  Those of us who love Him don’t belong here, but are citizens of another kingdom altogether, the Kingdom of Heaven [see Colossians 1:13].  We are ‘otherworldly’ people, living by different standards, with different laws.  Take care of your salvation with its place of inner peace. It’s priceless!

We look at our lives through a spiritual lens now, as we see how our actions as husbands and wives, fathers and mothers, friends and coaches, workers and employers relate to [Yahweh's] will.
