Psalm 89 stirs my heart! What a vibrant rhapsody of praise is encapsulated in the first eighteen verses! It was written by Ethan the Ezrahite, and I was intrigued to discover more about him. ‘Ezrahite’ signifies he was a descendant of Zerah from the tribe of Judah, yet his personal lineage was from Levi. A singer and musician during the time of Asaph, he was involved in Temple worship. The Topical Encyclopaedia describes him as “…a wise man from the tribe of Levi, specifically from the family of Zerah, of Judah.” Connected to Levi and Judah - fascinating!
Ethan begins by extolling the faithfulness of Yahweh, exclaiming, “Faithful love is built up for ever; you establish your faithfulness in the heavens” (v.2). This powerful statement sets the scene for the next sixteen verses. I believe true worship is inspired by admiration; we cannot worship Yahweh unless we admire Him. Do you admire Him? It’s such an ordinary little word, isn’t it, but it’s synonymous with words like wonder, awe, and veneration, which sound much more descriptive of Yahweh, don’t they? Absolutely! But let’s get up close and personal with the little word. Do you admire Yahweh? Pause a moment; think of three practical things you genuinely admire.
Ethan admires the way Yahweh controls the raging sea (v.9), and that He’s greatly feared in the ‘council of the holy ones’ (7), and that righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne (14). But these are only three of the things he mentions in those eighteen verses, which ring with admiration and pure worship! His heart becomes increasingly full as his rhapsody soars to a crescendo, and he bursts into a joyous exclamation of the happiness of those who know and walk in Yahweh’s way. “…they walk in the light from your face,” he cries. “They rejoice in your name all day long, and they are exalted by your righteousness. For you are their magnificent strength…” (vv.15-17).
To Yahweh’s admirers everywhere: whatever you may be going through, however you may feel, know this: He is, right now, today, your magnificent strength! You’re very blessed - be happy!
