Peace For Our Time

Thought For The Week 434

In September 1938, one year before the start of WW2, Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain returned to England from a conference in Germany waving a document signed by Great Britain, Germany, France and Italy.  He was to declare, famously, “I believe it is peace for our time.”  One year later Britain declared war on Nazi Germany and WW2 began.  Peace for our world is evasive. Yahshua prophesied, “Nation will go to war against nation, and kingdom against kingdom” [Luke 21:10].  Globally, nations are at war and civil uprisings are multiple. It’s estimated there are currently 32 ongoing, worldwide conflicts, with more than 526,000 battle-related deaths each year. Peace for our time is only available personally, and through Yahweh’s mercy.  It is available for you!

Isaiah declared, “You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you” [Isaiah 26:3, New Living Translation]!  Perfect peace is constant peace, which is attained when we’re totally committed to, and focused on, Yahweh.  It’s closely linked to righteousness, for Yahweh promised, “The result of righteousness will be peace; the effect of righteousness will be quiet confidence forever” [Isaiah 32:17, italics added; Christian Standard Bible].  Do you have peace despite everything?  If not, how is your righteousness?

When we come to Yahshua all the piled-up sins from our past are forgiven and wiped away; we’re as pure as a new-born child. It’s our first taste of righteousness.  This doesn’t go away, but must be maintained since it must grow.  I’ve listened to many sermons on the subject of righteousness and been regularly challenged by A.W. Tozer’s cry, “Holiness is not an optional extra.”  Yet, how does a busy, committed believer know he or she is growing in righteousness?  It’s not a quality we can measure, and though we may recognise it in others, we certainly don’t see it in ourselves.  Yahweh Himself gives us a clue: “If only you had paid attention to my commands. Then your peace would have been like a river, and your righteousness like the waves of the sea” [Isaiah 48:18].  Obedience to Yahweh’s commandments is the simple key to obtaining righteousness and peace.
