Reality Check

Thought For The Week 400

The apostle Paul cautioned the Galatian church, “Do not be deceived: [Yahweh] cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows” [Galatians 6:7].  The Amplified Bible expands our understanding: “Do not be deceived, [Yahweh] is not mocked [He will not allow Himself to be ridiculed, nor treated with contempt nor allow His precepts to be scornfully set aside]; for whatever a man sows, this and this only is what he will reap.”  This is serious caution, and still pertinent. The principle of sowing seeds and reaping a harvest is as old as time, and understood by everyone.   Would it surprise you to know that Paul was building on something Yahweh said?

‘You reap what you sow’ is a well-known proverb in the English language, used to show that future consequences are inevitably shaped by present actions.  It’s origin is the Bible!  When Yahweh saw His people worshipping a calf idol, He told Hosea, “They sow the wind, and reap the whirlwind” [Hosea 8:7].  He was clearly warning that the consequences of already bad actions would be even worse. A modern example of this is the disaster of the Titanic.  The man responsible for building it was asked how safe the vessel was.  He replied ironically, “Not even God can sink it.”  It sank two hours and forty minutes after striking an iceberg on the maiden voyage; more than 1500 people died.  He sowed the wind and reaped a whirlwind!  Why? Was Yahweh responsible for sinking the Titanic?  No!

There’s a divine law attached to the principle of sowing; it’s well-known. We plant seed and expect to harvest more than was sown!  It’s a permanent law, locked into the functioning of our world like the laws of gravity or aerodynamics. These laws don’t change!  An abundant harvest can be either a blessing or a tragedy!  “Those who live only to satisfy their own sinful nature will harvest decay and death from that sinful nature,” writes Paul. “But those who live to please the Spirit will harvest everlasting life from the Spirit” [Galatians 6:8].  Whatever we do, there will be a harvest.  Time to take a reality check?  What am I ‘sowing’ into my life and my world?
