Have you ever wondered what Yahweh is like? We know He created Adam in His own image [Genesis 1:27], so we have a basic idea, but since He is also immortal, invisible, omnipotent, omniscient and so much more, the human mind speculates in vain! How can we possibly ‘know’ Him? It’s a question that has tantalized humanity from the beginning of time. Throughout the Bible, writers have likened Him – His attitudes, actions, reactions, emotions – to a diverse range of natural phenomena. One of my favourites is Isaiah’s picture of Him “enthroned above the circle of the earth” [Isaiah 40:22].
David describes Yahweh’s voice as majestic and powerful, thundering over mighty waters, saying it “… strikes with flashes of lightning” [Psalm 29:3-4;7]. Another psalmist writes, “He wraps himself in light as with a garment…He makes the clouds his chariot and rides on the wings of the wind” [Psalm 104:2-3]. What an extraordinary picture!
I love the accounts of Yahweh helping Israel out when they were under attack. When Pharoah and his charioteers were pursuing them into the Red Sea “He jammed the wheels of their chariots” [Exodus 14:25] to delay them until everyone was safely across. When they entered the Promised Land and were being pursued by the enemies, He “hurled large hailstones down on them, and more of them died from the hail than were killed by the swords of the Israelites” [Joshua 10:11]. When He was organising the great exodus from Egypt, we’re introduced to the way all creation serves at His command. Every plague was a natural disaster, miraculous only by its timing!
Who is He, this magnificent, glorious Being who – apparently – looks like us? Can we possibly relate to Him? Oh, yes, for we’ve had amazing help. He sent His beloved Son, clothed in humanity, to show us! In Yahshua we saw Yahweh’s love, compassion, mercy, kindness, passion, righteousness, and so much more. Yahshua said, “Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father” [John 14:9]. The more we get to know Yahshua the more we will know Yahweh. And if we open the eyes of our hearts as the psalmists did, we will see Him everywhere!
