Settle Yourself

Thought For The Week 351

“Wait on [Yahweh];” cries the psalmist! “Be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart” [Psalm 27:14]!  The prophet states, “Blessed are all those who wait for Him” [Isaiah 30:18].  There’s a spiritual practice known as ‘waiting on Yahweh’, and it’s reputed to be of great value to all those who use it.  This is wonderful if you understand it and know how to apply it!  Personally, when it comes to waiting, I don’t have much patience; I can always think of other things I’d rather be doing!

However, waiting on Yahweh can result in a variety of benefits.  The Bible tells me my heart will be strengthened, I will be blessed; my strength will be renewed; I will soar like eagles, run and not be weary, and walk and not faint [Isaiah 40:31].  So, how do we access these benefits?  As a young believer I was keen to understand.  I read books, asked questions, listened to sermons, devoured testimonies, and came to the conclusion that ‘waiting on Yahweh’ was connected with knowing and depending on Him.  “The deep root of all scriptural truth is this: “absolute dependence on [Yahweh],” writes Andrew Murray.  “As we practice that attitude, it will become more natural and achievable for you to wait on [Yahweh]” (sic).

How do you begin your day?  We’re encouraged to have regular, quality times with Yahweh.  But often the day begins before we even get out of bed; mundane things and the ever-ticking clock push that idea out of sight!  Don’t set yourself an impossible goal!  If Bible reading and prayer are not practical before the day begins – don’t ‘throw yourself’ at it.  Speed reading the allocated passage, rushing through the prayer list, getting it all ‘out of the way’ achieves very little.  Taking maybe five minutes to settle your inner self before Yahweh and commit the day to Him will achieve much.  Amy Carmichael advised that if we have just five minutes we should ‘hem it with quietness’.  I was to discover that five minutes hemmed with quietness amounted to a blessed, settled start, resulting in a precious connection with Yahweh to take me through the day.  But don’t forget to come back for some quality time later!
