Yahshua was in Jerusalem during the last week of His life, visiting the magnificent Temple which was being openly admired by many. His reaction was to speak of a time when nothing would remain of its splendour. Luke 21 is a remarkable chapter, recording His mind-blowing prophecy about the future. Much of it has already been fulfilled; incredibly, we see some of it unfolding in our time! Let’s take a quick look.
Yahshua foretold the dreadful persecution that would hit believers as the gospel began to spread across the world [v12]. Beginning with Stephen, disciples suffered all He predicted. The destruction of the Temple happened in 70 AD when Roman soldiers razed it to the ground, leaving only the Western Wall which we know today [vv20-24]. Gentiles controlled Jerusalem from that time for almost 1900 years; Yahshua labelled this as ‘the time of the Gentiles’.
In June 1967 there was a 6-day war in Israel, during which the Israelis, who were occupying only half of the holy city, swept into occupied eastern Jerusalem and claimed it back! It was a breathless time of expectancy and joy for believers, as we realised a significant part of Yahshua’s great prophecy had been fulfilled before our eyes; officially the time of the Gentiles was over. We are living through the outworking prophecy!
Yahshua continued, ‘There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. People will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world” [25-26]. Does that sound familiar? Do you think space exploration, climate change, floods, and fires take Yahweh by surprise? He knew how we’d mismanage His beautiful creation and upset the delicate balance He crafted to protect and preserve life. We have Yahshua’s word that ‘this generation’ will see the entire prophecy fulfilled. Which generation will that be? Mine? Yours? The one just being born?
Yahshua warned, “Watch out! Don’t let your hearts be dulled by carousing and drunkenness, and by the worries of this life. Don’t let that day catch you unaware” [34]. Stay focused, He’s coming back very soon.
