I first heard the term ‘the deeper life’ when I was in my thirties. Hungry to know more about Yahweh, and yearning to understand Him better, I was fascinated by the sound of this, but what was it exactly? How could I achieve a ‘deeper life’? Was there a Biblical basis for the term? I found myself in interesting discussions but, before the advent of the World Wide Web, was unable to find much documented help.
One day, I ‘discovered’ the Amplified Bible and Paul’s prayer, “[For my determined purpose is] that I may know Him [that I may progressively become more deeply and intimately acquainted with Him, perceiving and recognizing and understanding the wonders of His Person more strongly and more clearly]” [Philippians 3:10]. I made this prayer, in this version, my very own. Gradually I came to understand that Yahweh Himself is the deeper life. The growing intimacy of learning about Him and drawing closer to Him demands increasing holiness, and a commitment to seeking for His will and walking in obedience to His commands.
The deeper life isn’t the ‘next level’ of spiritual growth, but the outcome of a deeper and more personal relationship with Yahweh. A.W. Tozer used to say, “To know [Yahweh] well one must think on Him unceasingly.” What a challenge, but, for me, it made good sense of Paul’s great desire which had become my prayer. However, how is it possible to think about something ‘unceasingly’? Does Tozer mean we think about Yahweh 24/7? Or all the time we’re awake? Neither of these options is feasible - unless we’re closeted in isolation. I found making Yahweh my main interest, my ‘go to’ thinking place when my mind was quiet, the subject of my studies and research, opened my heart and understanding immensely. Regular Bible reading and meditating on all it reveals of Him, continues to help me become ‘more deeply and intimately acquainted with Him’!
As we grow in understanding, and our knowledge of Yahweh increases, we find a curious phenomenon: the more we know the less we seem to know! There’s always something fresh to understand about the wonders of our beloved Father.
