One of my Bible-reading joys is tracing the apostle Peter’s growth in wisdom and spiritual maturity as evidenced through his letters. They never fail to bless and enrich me. His intention in writing the first letter was to strengthen believers in times of suffering and intense persecution. Unsurprisingly, it continues to inspire, instruct, and bless people today. It’s very uplifting, and the Christian Standard Bible commentary summarises: “We are called to holiness and a life of love. We are also called to glorify (Yahweh) in our daily lives and to imitate (Yahshua).” What a glorious thought and challenging goal.
The way of salvation is complex, exciting, and life-long! Yahweh watches over us, teaches us, guides us and constantly ‘proves’ our faith. Peter writes, “You are being guarded by (Yahweh’s) power…even though now for a short time, if necessary, you suffer grief in various trials so that the proven character of your faith…may result in praise, glory, and honour at the revelation of (Yahshua)” (1 Peter 1:5-7). Faith, it seems, must be proved! Not because Yahweh has doubts about us but because He wants us to grow and mature all the time. We are being ‘proved’ as bread-dough is proved, to make a difference, to increase our experience and improve the outcome. We will be challenged and changed continually, for we’re being shaped and fashioned by a Master Craftsman!
There are times in all our lives when things happen which we can’t understand. Times when we’re tempted to wonder where Yahweh is and, maybe, if He even cares! Rest assured – He’s always there and always cares! Nevertheless, life happens, and our salvation doesn’t always protect us from its turbulences. “We must expect trial,” writes Charles Spurgeon, “because trial is the element of faith. Faith without trial is like a diamond uncut, the brilliance of which has never been seen.” The heavenly Craftsman is invested in uncovering that brilliance.
James encourages us, “Consider it pure joy…whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything” (James 1:2-4).
