Everywhere we go we hear people talking about the rising cost of living. It’s on news channels, in newspapers, on chat shows, and a topic of conversation in supermarkets and public transport. How many conversations have you had in the past week? Does it make you anxious? Anxiety is easy to pick up, isn’t it, but what should our attitude be? Yahweh is our Father, and our ‘times’ are in His hands. He wants the privilege of taking care of His own.
There’s a very simple key to prosperity and peace in Leviticus 26 where Yahweh says, “If you follow my decrees and are careful to obey my commands, I will send you the seasonal rains. The land will then yield its crops, and the trees of the field will produce their fruit. Your threshing season will overlap with the grape harvest, and your grape harvest will overlap with the season of planting grain. You will eat your fill and live securely in your own land. I will give you peace in the land, and you will be able to sleep with no cause for fear” [Leviticus 26:3-6]. What a great picture of prosperous farming! The weather exactly right, and each harvest overlapping, ensuring sufficient food for everyone! The government which could promise this would shoot to power overnight!
Yet Yahweh does promise it! This isn’t about an idyllic age to come; it was promised to Israel in their lifetime. The key is right there in the opening sentence: follow Yahweh’s decrees and be careful to obey His commands! The world is reaping the fallout from decades [centuries?] of ignoring Yahweh’s commands; of living selfishly; of thoughtless pollution of our planet. Where does this leave those who trust in Him?
I believe there is provision and prosperity for those who follow Yahweh and obey Him. We may no longer be able to ensure the right climate and a successful harvest, but we can expect to be taken care of bountifully, which is what the promise implies. Peace, provision, safety and life follow automatically if we live by Yahweh’s statutes and observe His commands.
