The Law Of Communion

Thought For The Week 421

Yahshua was speaking about His relationship with His Father, something the religious people found hard to comprehend.  “The one who sent me is with me,” He said.  “He has not left me alone, because I always do what pleases him” [John 8:29].  What a simple, yet profound statement; an amazing picture of their relationship.  Recently I found a golden nugget of wisdom in these words.  They “not only describe the quality of His life with His Father,” writes Andrew Murray, “but also reveal the law of communion with [Yahweh]; simple obedience.”  In this context, ‘communion’ speaks of intimate communication, fellowship, sharing or rapport.  The law of communion isn’t one you’ll find in Leviticus or Deuteronomy; I’d never even heard the phrase until lately.  But what a joy it describes!

Recently, I wrote about the obligation of obedience, and how this behaviour, expected of members in Yahweh’s Household, releases an abundance of blessing.  Now we see this behaviour modelled by the firstborn in our Family, Yahshua: “I always do what pleases Him!”  Can we really describe this as ‘simple obedience’?  Is there, I ask myself, anything simple about obedience?  Few of us enjoy being told what to do or how to behave! Yet the concept is very simple to understand!

In the Garden of Eden there was only one rule: don’t eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil [Genesis 2:17].  Uninterrupted fellowship with Yahweh and a life of utopian bliss depended on obedience to the one rule.  Adam and Eve destroyed it, bringing sin and misery into the world.  From this we learn obedience will give us continuous access to Yahweh’s loving fellowship, His presence in our lives.  No wonder Yahshua emphasised it so strongly in His final thoughts to His disciples [John 14 &15].

Incredibly, Yahshua learned obedience through the things that He suffered [Hebrews 5:8].  Do we allow ourselves to learn from our sufferings?  What a powerful, astonishing consequence is to be gained: intimate fellowship with our beloved Father.  “Let the thought take deep hold of us,” concludes Andrew Murray. “It is to the obedient that His word comes, ‘I am with you always’.”
