It was the night before Yahshua died: He and His friends were eating together in a borrowed guestroom in Jerusalem. He confessed He’d been eagerly looking forward to eating this particular meal at this Passover [Luke 22:15]. A truly astonishing remark! His heart was centred on fulfilling His Father’s will, and this night would herald the beginning of a new day. As the meal progressed, “…he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, ‘This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.’ In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you’” [Luke 22:19-20]. It’s very unlikely the disciples would have understood any of this, so what did it mean?
Several hundred years earlier, Jeremiah prophesied, “The days are coming,” declares [Yahweh], “when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel…I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts…” [Jeremiah 31:31-33]. All Yahweh’s covenants were validated by blood, but this one, sealed by the precious blood of His own Son, would be the most far-reaching and powerful of all. When Yahshua blessed the cup of wine at that last meal, the 600-year-old prophecy blazed into life, and the disciples were given a glorious revelation of the Living Word! Of course, they didn’t understand it at the time, but how their hearts must have flamed with light, when later the Holy Spirit brought it back to memory [John 16:13]. No wonder the early church set the world on fire! These men had spent three-and-a-half years in company with the LIVING WORD!
My own heart flamed as I pondered these things. I learned Yahshua was the Living Word from my father’s knee, but suddenly I saw it! As I mused, I considered the power of the Living Word in my life, in my world today. He is everything written about Him, He has all power given to Him, He’s won the ultimate victory, and He’s my Shepherd. I will trust and not be afraid.
