The Masterpiece

Thought For The Week 431

Michelangelo [1475-1564], an Italian sculptor and painter, was one of the most creative and influential artists in the history of Western art.  In his early twenties he was commissioned to create a statue of David from a massive block of very desirable, white marble from the quarries of Carrara.  Unfortunately, the block had imperfections and damage from quarrying and transporting the massive piece. Then two earlier sculptors had created further mutilation before ultimately deeming it unworkable!  It’s said that Michelangelo initially sat before the misshapen monstrosity and studied its very limitations with infinite patience.  Working with those limitations he created an exquisite work of art, the world’s most famous sculpture.

How many of us came to Yahshua damaged by sin, circumstances and life?  Do we still struggle with our imperfections and limitations?  Are we unsure of finding a purpose in His kingdom, of there ever being something we could usefully accomplish?  Many of us feel overwhelmed by defects and damage, yet when Yahweh chooses He sees beyond all the weaknesses and flaws to the perfectly created masterpiece He has in His heart’s vision.  Peter says Yahweh “…knew you and chose you long ago…” [1Peter 1:1-2]. It’s a choice which has reached out to us over the centuries, plucking us from sin, and lovingly recreating us to fulfil His purpose.

Quarries and mines yield a variety of mineral treasures and richness because of intense heat and the pressure of land mass acting on specific materials. Do you feel you’ve been in the intense heat of life and the severe pressure of circumstances? Sometimes this is from life before salvation, sometimes it happens as we walk with Yahweh.  For all of us there are invariably certain unalterable things we must learn to accept: ourselves for who we are, where we came from and what we’re like now.  To agree to be the person you are, will set you free to become Yahweh’s masterpiece!  Charles Spurgeon wrote that Yahweh’s choice “makes chosen [people] choice [people].”

Acknowledge the dignity and nobility of your calling and rest in the understanding that Yahweh is creating something in you with which He is ‘well pleased’.
