The Preciousness

Thought For The Week 499

Do you have something or someone in your life you consider to be precious? I hope so, for it would be a poverty-stricken life where nothing or no-one was!  We all need some preciousness!  Writing about Yahshua, the apostle Peter cried, “Unto you therefore which believe, he is precious” (1Peter 2:7).  Interestingly, the Greek word translated ‘precious’ is a noun, not an adjective, which means it’s not describing Yahshua, but stating something about His character. An adjective has degrees, so could prompt the question, “How precious?” But no!  Peter says Yahshua is the preciousness. What does it mean?

“To those who believe,” writes Oswald J. Sanders, “He is the essence of all preciousness.”  The essence of something defines the intrinsic nature or indispensable quality of whatever is under consideration.  For example, in perfume the essence is the concentrated, aromatic core of the fragrance.  This can be used to give us parfum, or diluted to produce eau de parfum, and eau de toilette.  As the essence of preciousness, Yahshua permeates everything in our lives.  He’s the preciousness of my salvation, rejoicings, successes, daily life, relationships, and so on.  He’s also the preciousness of my failures, disasters, problems, sorrows and woes.  Because I am in Him and He is in me, I’m infused with His essence.  I may sometimes feel it’s a little ‘diluted’, but it’s always there.

Many people admire Yahshua, write about Him, discuss Him, even argue over Him, but I’ve come to realise only those of us who believe in Him can discern and enjoy His preciousness.  “Is it not a simple fact,” writes Robert Tuck, “that those who are living lives of faith do see in [Yahshua] more and more precious things than anyone else can see?”  A daily life of faith will automatically cultivate and develop our ability to discern His preciousness!  The world will never understand our preoccupation with Him, nor comprehend this preciousness.  “To you then who believe (who adhere to, trust in, and rely on Him) is the preciousness” (Classic Amplified Bible).

Together we can say, “Yes, he is altogether lovely and desirable. This is my beloved and this is my friend,” (Song of Solomon 5:16).

We look at our lives through a spiritual lens now, as we see how our actions as husbands and wives, fathers and mothers, friends and coaches, workers and employers relate to [Yahweh's] will.
