The Secret Of Peace

Thought For The Week 348 By Val Warsop

We live in a world of trouble, difficulties, disturbing news and unpredictable weather. We hear of people struggling to overcome fear, anxiety and mental distress as they try to come to terms with what is happening. There is a sense that nothing is ‘normal’ any more.  Have you been affected?  Are you able to put your trust and confidence in Emmanuel, Yahweh with us?

On the night before He died, Yahshua said, “In this world you will have trouble.  But take heart! I have overcome the world” [John 16:33].  The Classic Amplified Bible expands this: ‘I have deprived it of power to harm you and have conquered it for you’.  The 2015 edition says, ‘My conquest is accomplished, My victory abiding’.  This is a comforting promise which, astonishingly, was given to the disciples before He died!  He was so securely confident in all that would be purchased at Calvary that He considered Himself to have deprived the world of power to harm us and to have accomplished His victory already!

After this positive outpouring of peace, faith and tender caring, Yahshua and His disciples sang a hymn, before He led them to a favourite prayer place, the Garden of Gethsemane.  Here there was a final battle; He had overcome the world, now He had to deal with Himself.  Mark tells us that in the garden Yahshua “began to be struck with terror and amazement and deeply troubled and depressed” [Mark 14:33, Classic Amplified].  It was so bad that He begged His Father to take the suffering away [v36].  Matthew tells us He did this three times. It was a struggle [Matthew 26:39-44], but His lifetime habit of obedience carried Him to victory.

We shouldn’t be surprised when the world hands us trouble; Yahshua prophesied that it would!  He doesn’t get dismayed or discouraged if we have some struggles with anxiety, fear or depression along the way; He understands. However, in Him we can have peace despite disturbing challenges and adversities; there is no cause for alarm.  Our victory and peace are secure!  We need to expand our base of confidence regularly as we continue to explore an ever-growing trust and dependence on Him.
