This Is My Friend!

Thought For The Week 544

The opening verses of the book of Hebrews are a powerful, attention-grabbing and fabulous portrayal of Yahshua (1:1-4). The unknown writer packs such a wealth of information into so few verses that only a slow, meditative perusal can really do them justice. They seldom fail to captivate my heart!

The author introduces us to Yahshua not only as the Son of Yahweh, but also as His Voice, pointing out that previously Yahweh had spoken to Israel through His prophets but “In these last days, he has spoken to us by his Son” (v2). Until His arrival on earth, Israel was unaware that Yahweh had a Son. They were aware of the mysterious ‘son of man’ of Daniel’s vision, where the name was an explicit Messianic title given to One to whom would be given total dominion (Daniel 7:13-14). Yahshua used this title in reference to Himself more than eighty times! He knew Himself to be the promised Messiah.

As well as the rightful owner of this Messianic title, Yahshua is Yahweh’s appointed Heir and, the author of Hebrews points out, Yahweh made the universe through Him (v2). In other words, He is the Creator, through Whom all things came into existence! This is breathtaking, sending us back to Genesis with fresh understanding!

Yahshua, we learn, is the radiance of Yahweh’s glory and the exact expression of His nature, sustaining all things by His powerful word (v3). Pause a moment. Read that again. Try to picture it. What does it mean to you? It overwhelms me! No wonder Yahshua could say, “The one who has seen me has seen the Father” (John14:9), and the apostle John could write, “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us” (John 1:14)!

Our author continues, “After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high” (v3). Yahshua is an exalted King, and His perfect sacrifice for sin makes Him the Priest of Yahweh, and our High Priest.

As I pondered these things, my heart murmured, “This is my beloved, and this is my friend” (Song of Solomon 5:16). I am immensely honoured and profoundly awed!

Pause For Thought

No matter what happens to us in this life, the word of [Yahweh] tells us that [Yahweh] is for us, not against us.
