Almost 2,000 years ago, Yahshua’s disciples requested, “Rabbi, teach us to pray!” They would have been familiar with prayer from involvement in the synagogue, but watching Yahshua pray seems to have stirred an inner longing [Luke 11:1]. Yahshua’s response was the well-known, remarkable prayer which sets out a simple pattern, as well as being complete in itself.
“Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one” [Matthew 6:9-13, NIV].
I often use this prayer to direct my praying. Concise and basic in outline, nevertheless, it can be used as a foundation to cover all that we need to pray about. Masterful in its brevity, the fact that it has endured for centuries, still used every day around the world, is a lasting testament to Yahshua’s personal relationship with Yahweh.
Prayer is a challenge, a comfort, a life source and a mystery. Why are some prayers answered almost before you have asked? Why do miracles happen when it seems you had only a prayer thought? Why does fervent and earnest prayer sometimes seem to be ignored? There are many answers - and no answers! Did Yahshua have unanswered prayers? Yes, I think so! He prayed for Peter that his faith wouldn’t fail [Luke 22:32] and a few hours later it did fail for a while, spectacularly [Luke 22:55-62]. He prayed for His disciples that Yahweh would “protect them from the evil one” [John17:15], but we know, even as Yahshua knew, that Judas Iscariot was not protected [v12].
What about delayed prayer? Yahshua taught us all to pray, “Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven”! It is the most delayed and most prayed request in the history of prayer – and yet still we pray! We have confidence that one day the scripture will be fulfilled that the Word of Yahweh will go out from Jerusalem and His Law from Mount Zion [Isaiah 2:3]! The delay will be over! Never stop praying!
