What Are They Worth?

Thought For The Week 546

Isaiah 2 opens impressively with a wonderful vision of the ‘last days’, when all nations will stream to Israel and many will say, “Come, let’s go up to the mountain of [Yahweh]…He will teach us about his ways, so that we may walk in his paths.” We’re told farming implements will be made from war machinery, and nations will no longer attack each other or even prepare for war! What an incredible prophecy! A picture to enthral our hearts (Isaiah 2:2-4).

Unfortunately, but realistically, Isaiah immediately brings things down to earth by speaking into the conditions prevalent in his day. They were drastically different from his utopian vision! In Yahweh’s eyes, the nation was behaving very badly (vv. 6-8), yet as I read, I was sobered for I couldn’t help wondering, ‘Are we any different?’ We’re all simply human, and the problems of humanity are constantly mirrored throughout the centuries. Isaiah succinctly describes the outcome of such selfishness and sin, “…humanity is brought low, and each person is humbled” (v.9). We may have grandiose ideas of our importance on this earth, but when we ignore the way of Yahweh our behaviour brings us low. This condition brings a reaction from Yahweh, too. “The pride of mankind will be humbled, and human loftiness will be brought low” (v.11).

“Put no more trust in a mere human, who has only the breath in his nostrils. What is he really worth?” states the concluding verse of the chapter (v.22). Its significance fastened on my heart recently. I read it several times pensively. I thought of Elon Musk, the richest man in the world. What is he really worth? He only has the breath in his nostrils! I asked the same questions about world leaders, high ranking officials, power-hungry activists, and, personally, of those who trouble and unsettle me: what are they really worth?

We live in difficult times but be comforted, our hope is in Yahweh! “Tell the righteous it will be well with them,” says Isaiah (3:10, italics added). While Katara Patton writes reassuringly, “We’re known by [Yahweh] when we seek to follow Him and follow His commandments...We’re known and we’re loved.”

‘Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom
and thanksgiving and honour
and power and might
be to our God for ever and ever! Amen.’

Revelation 7:12, NRSVA

Pause For Thought

[Yahweh] is planning a party…a party to end all parties. A feast. Not giggles and chitchat in the conference room, but wide-eyed wonder in the throne room of [Elohim].
